Electrical Systems in Office Furniture and Screens - BS6396

The British Standards Institutions guidelines for the safe installation and testing of electrical systems in office furniture and screens. As part of Health and Safety legislation, employers have an obligation to ensure that the guidelines set out by BS6396 are followed.

The aim of the standard is to improve safety in the office environment, but it only relates to items connected by a plug to a 13 amp wall or floor socket. The main areas of concern are:

Fusing of sockets

  • A maximum of 6 sockets can be connected to each 13 amp supply.
  • No fusing is required on the module if only two sockets are connected to a 13 amp supply.
  • Individual 5 amp fuses are required for each socket if three or four sockets used.
  • Individual 3.15 amp fuses are required for each socket if five or six sockets used.
  • Up to six sockets can be protected by one 7 amp fuse.
  • Appliances drawing over 5 amps should have a dedicated supply from a 13 amp socket.

Earthing

  • Unless all electrical equipment is at least double insulated then all metal parts should be earthed, which can be achieved using the earth leads supplied as standard with all power units or power boxes.
  • The power modules that we supply are double insulated.

Cabling

  • Cables must be suitably protected within the furniture.
  • Restrictions apply to the total length of a power cable run.
  • Power and data cables must be segregated.

Installation and Testing

  • We can provide site surveys and  a full testing service, details upon request.
