Case Study: Hitachi Microsystems Limited
|
We were
approached by Hitachi's facilities team to discuss a particular problem
within the Hitachi Microsystems division. They needed to add a substantial
amount of storage along one wall of their office as part of a planned
reconfiguration.
However, the problem was a large
number of pipes which ran along the lower part of the wall. They stood out
from the wall by some distance, and had been boxed in with a timber
framework. The office manager also stressed that he could not afford
to lose the amount of space that would have been taken if normal cupboards
had just been placed in front of the boxed-in pipes.
Hitachi
have been purchasing Assmann's superb InvitAss storagewall system from us
for some years now, and this leant itself to this requirement. Following
our initial meeting, outline proposals and suggestions, together with a
budget cost, were agreed with Hitachi. We then worked on the
constructional detail, discussing the project closely with Assmann, whose
feedback and assistance was invaluable.
To
ensure a sound base for the storage, it was necessary to lift the
raised-flooring, and to build the base units on the concrete floor slab.

The pictures show
the area after the boxing-in had been removed from the pipes, and the
floor close to it, lifted. |

The wall itself was not
straight, and the various pipes stood away from the wall by some distance. |

The picture on the left
shows one of the base units after our team had cut away part of the back
panel to allow access to the pipes.
The picture on the right shows the
lower level of cupboards being installed, with the first interim top being
fitted.

Two shots showing the
base cupboards securely fitted on the slab-floor. The units had been
specially designed so that the doors would open above the raised flooring,
and additional front panels were fitted below them. |

Left, an unusual shot
looking down the reveal behind the newly installed base cupboards.
Right: the first top unit is a
special shallow unit, designed to keep the front flush whilst
accommodating the pillar behind it.

Left; the main cupboards
at the top are starting to take shape now.
Right; one of the base cupboards
showing how access is maintained to the pipes. Removable back panels were
designed to fit inside the cupboards to conceal the gap, whilst being
easily removed.

Right and left, the
finished units. The areas without doors have been especially designed to
accommodate faxes and printers. The power and data feeds can be fed
through the void behind the cupboards. |
 |
The finished item, providing floor to ceiling storage for box files,
stationery and with fax/printer stations built in. The units were supplied
in a medium grey melamine finish.
Of course, there is the added
aesthetic benefit that the design brings to the room. Where before there
were multiple sections of boxing around the pipes, and pillars, there now
exists one smooth run from left to right.
Our thanks to Hitachi Europe Ltd
and to Hitachi Microsystems for trusting this project to us, and for
allowing us to share this project with you. They were delighted with the
outcome: Hitachi Reference
We would also like to thank
Assmann for their special support. |
