FIRA Gold Award

The FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) Gold Award is the supreme accolade of product excellence. Achievement of the FIRA Gold Award for a furniture range, is the ultimate assurance that those products have been manufactured to the highest standards applicable. It is acknowledged nationally and internationally as a true mark of quality.

To achieve the FIRA Gold Award there are many area's of testing to be carried out, here are just a few of them:

  •  A full ergonomic assessment on the furniture is undertaken.
  • Pedestals drawers are opened and closed 80,000 times.
  • Doors are opened and closed 80,000 times.
  • Tambour doors opened and closed 20,000 times.
  • Desks are dropped tested from a height of up to 300mm.
  • Units are struck with a 25kg sprung impactor.
  • MFC is tested for strength and bonded edges for adhesion performance.
  • Finish performance including mechanical damage, wet and dry heat tests and resistance to liquid  attacks.
  • Continual audits ensure that the units are manufactured to the same specification as at the time of the original tests.

The standards that FIRA currently test are:

  • Strength and Stability - BS EN 1730, ISO 7170 and FIRA test methods.
  • Surface Finishes - FIRA standard 6250.
  • Finishes on Metals - BS 9300.
  • Adhesion of Surfacing and Edging materials to Substrate - FIRA standard 6250
  • Substrates - BS EN 312 and BS EN 622.
  • Cable Management - BS 6396
  • Ergonomic Assessment  - BS EN 527 and BS EN ISO 9241.
